What type of astigmatism are more prone to amblyopia??

By comparing with the rule astigmatism (WTR) and against the rule astigmatism (ATR);

  • ATR more prevalence in elderly/adult
  • WTR more prevelance in children
Children are still having development on their eye. During critical period if amblyopia eye is treated the chances to recover is high compare in later life. In sensitive period (2-8 YEARS OLD) amblyopic eye still can undergo treatment. Recent studies show that the treatment regimen actually can still be use in amblyopic eye for up til 17 years of age.

  • ATR take longer duration of occlusion compare to WTR
  • Less line gain in BCVA for ATR compare to WTR
  • ATR - horizontal meridian is blur/vertical meridian clear
  • WTR -horizontal clear/vertical blur
Blurring the horizontal lines has more influence on the development of amblyopia during period of visual development.

Accommodative response in vertical meridian greater than those in horizontal meridian. Since WTR having vertical line blur so with accommodation it can overcome that astigmatism by getting the vertical line clear. While ATR, with accommodation; horizontal meridian having lag of accommodation so the horizontal meridian remain blur that can lead to amblyopia.

By squeezing the eye blur image on vertical meridean can be overcome in WTR but not in ATR.

CONCLUSION : ATR more prone to Amblyopia.
